Since the death of his boyfriend, morbidly obese 600 pound Charlie has confined himself to his small Idaho apartment and is eating himself to oblivion. With his health quickly failing, Charlie becomes desperate to reconnect with Ellie, his estranged and angry teenage daughter who he has not seen in years. He would give her anything: his love, his money....maybe even his life.

Written by Obie Award-winning playwright Samuel D. Hunter, The Whale is a tough, humorous and emotionally powerful play about how we cope with loss, and how new definitions of family, friends and religion shape our lives.

STC is committed to diversity and encourages performers of all ethnicities, gender identities, and ages, as well as performers with disabilities, to audition. We consign ourselves to reflecting and representing all members of our community on stage.

CASTING

CHARLIE: character is early- to mid-40s, male. Gay. Weighing around 600 lbs, Charlie teaches online writing classes from home, but saves all his money to give to his daughter, Ellie, rather than using it for medical care. LIZ: character is early- to mid-40s, female. A working-class nurse. Beaten down by life. Alone except for taking care of Charlie, her only friend. She enables his addictions, and yet struggles to keep him alive. Hates religion, abonded the Mormon church very young, and hates Mormons for their role in Alan's (her brother's and Charlie's late boyfriend's) death.

ELDER THOMAS: character is 19, male. A young Mormon searching for answers. A former pothead, he left his mission after becoming violently discouraged by its futility and has come to Idaho to pursue his dream of seeing Mormonism help just one person.

ELLIE: character is 17, female. Charlie's estranged daughter who lives with Mary. She is lonely, angry and rebellious and runs a website where she posts pictures of friends, family and acquaintances with cruel captions. Charlie is the only person who has not yet given up on her.
